10 new State Records were set!

The Illinois Target Archery Association will hold its Outdoor State Championship on August 2nd & 3rd. The tournament will be held on the grounds of the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton, Illinois.

Please take note of the shooting times below. The USA Archery dress code for tournaments will be enforced (reminder, blue-jeans are no longer a problem, as long as they look professional). Equipment inspection will take place ahead of time. USA Archery age/gender/bow style categories will be in place for awards. Membership in USA Archery is required (NFAA membership can be used to acquire a free temporary USAA membership).

This is an all-ages event. Archers competing in Saturday’s JOAD State Outdoor Championships are welcome to also compete in Sunday’s State Outdoor event.

Schedule:

9:00 AM – Check-in table opens. Equipment inspection begins.

10:00 AM – Competition begins with warm-up/practice ends

Shooters should be ready to checked in and ready to shoot before 10:00 AM.

720 Round Format:

The 720 Round format is 72 arrows at a standard 4-color World Archery target. As with all outdoor World Archery tournaments, compounds use the big ten ring.

Distances

Para VI stands for Visually-Impaired, and is only available to archers who shoot in the visually-impaired format.

USA Archery Age Categories for 2025:

World Archery has changed the youth age classes to a more meaningful naming method. They are now “Under <some number>”. As long as you will never be that numerical age any time in the calendar year, you can compete in that age class. (Example: if you turn 13 on the final day of this year, you are not U13 any time this year — you are U15.)

They have also shortened the Master classes to be just the number (50+, 60+, 70+, etc)

If you were born in 2013 or more recently, you are a U13 (Bowman)
If you were born in 2011 or 2012, you are a U15 (Cub)
If you were born in 2008, 2009 or 2010, you are a U18 (Cadet)
If you were born in 2005, 2006, or 2007, you are a U21 (Junior)
If you were born in 2004-1978, you are a Senior
If you were born in 1975-1966, you are a 50+
If you were born in 1965-1956, you are a 60+
If you were born in 1955-1946, you are a 70+

The ages for the categories are determined on Dec 31st of the competition year. (So use your older age for the year, not the age you’ll be on the competition date.)

U13 – 12
U15 – 13,14
U18 – 15,16,17
U21 – 18,19,20
Senior – 21-49
50+ – 50-59
60+ – 60-69
70+ – 70-79

Pre-registration:

Pre-registration is required, and can be done by using the link below once registration opens. If you are participating in both the JOAD event and the all-ages event, please register for each separately.

The State Outdoor Championship will be requiring one of the membership options for participation. This means either having an full or temporary USA Archery membership, or a full NFAA membership. Temporary memberships can be arranged on the USA Archery web site. You will be asked for your USA Archery number during online registration.

All shooters will be eligible for awards regardless of registry method. Shooters submitting claims for national record scores are required to carry USA Archery membership.

Location:

DuPage County Fairgrounds (Follow the link for details, directions, hotels, area attractions, and more)

Equipment

Standard equipment inspection must be completed before you can shoot. Plan to arrive at least 1 hour before your start time for equipment inspection, sign-in, etc.
Arrow size must be 23/64 inches or smaller in diameter.
Compound bows have a draw weight limit of 60lbs.
The USA Archery dress code will be enforced.
Other standard USA Archery tournament rules will apply.

Awards:

Awards will be presented to the top three places in each USA Archery category for the 720 Round. Out-of-state archers will be eligible for awards. The ITAA maintains its tradition of awarding state champion awards while also recognizing excellent performances by out-of-state competitors.

Out-of-state competitors are awarded medals for finishing in the top three places among all competition in their class and division. Additionally, Illinois competitors are awarded medals for the top three places among Illinois competitors in their class and division, duplicating medals where necessary.

Additional Notes:

As with all outdoor tournaments, we always appreciate help hunting for missed arrows. Anyone sporting enough to bring additional metal detectors or sharp eyeballs will probably be called into action at some point during the day.

Because the distances will be long, binoculars and spotting scopes will help spectators see the target results better.

Skilled photography is difficult and time-consuming. We highly appreciate volunteers lending their skills to our events. Photos help spread the fun of archery beyond our community. If you’re willing to be an event photographer, please reach out to info@illinoistargetarchery.org so that we can get credentials and protocols in place.

Time Estimates:

Archery is a slow competition. Although it can feel like time is racing by for the competitor, it is harder for the audience to feel engaged. It is difficult to accurately predict how long events will take. (My general rule is to allow one minute per arrow shot, and then double or triple it depending on the ages of the shooters and the distances shot). Delays are usually caused by a combination of lost arrows and enjoyable chatter among participants between competition ends.

An outdoor 720 at a big tournament can take 3 hours.

Please schedule that much time in your plans for the competition weekend.
